My rosary-praying, curry-fearing, Shakira music booty-shakin’ momma just used the words “punked out” and “man up” in reference to Kanye West’s actions at the VMA. I’m strangely very proud of her.

A box of my da’s old things ;o). See, after he died in ‘02, my momma either gave away his belongings (mostly his clothes, shoes, and colognes) while most of them were put into storage or shipped to my grandmother’s house. In the process of moving—she to Miami and me to Istanbul—I found a box of what I believe were da’s favourite things. There’s a painting of him when he looked like he was in his late 20s or early 30s; it was done in Rota (Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain). Also in the box: a silver lighter, a Cross pen set, old newspaper clippings, several written in notepads, foreign currency, official military reports detailing the circumstances of why he was awarded certain medals while serving in Viet Nam, and old school transcipts (all As except for an A- for a semester of French his sophomore year in college!). I’ll try and allocate some luggage space for the painting when I leave for the ‘Bul in a few weeks. I want a part of my daddy with me for this new adventure ;o)

He’s fine, and so’s his family and friends. M’s working hard at his firm, but otherwise, he is unscathed. Thank you, God. Whew. The past couple of days I’ve subscribed to Google alerts and have hit the refresh buttons CNN International and Reuters for any news about the devasting flood in Istanbul.Heavy rainfall, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and razing of nature to make way for concrete buildings, has resulted in a severe flood and the loss of ~32 lives in the greater Istanbul area this week. Massive financial loss has also been reported, the brunt of which uninsured business- and homeowners bore. According to meteorologists, more heavy rainfall is expected Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Prayers all around.
